Romanian F-16s intercepted a naval drone in the Black Sea: what is known

The Romanian military has destroyed a small naval drone in the Black Sea off the coast of Constanta. Two F-16 fighter jets were scrambled to intercept the drone, one of which opened fire with its onboard cannon.

This was reported by the Romanian Ministry of Defense.

The marine drone was discovered on the morning of August 20 in Romania’s exclusive economic zone. The device was drifting near the Neptun Alpha offshore platform, approximately 80 nautical miles from Constanta.

The military was notified of the unidentified object by a commercial vessel at around 06:28 local time. After that, the command decided to urgently send two F-16 fighter jets to the area.

One of the aircraft targeted a naval drone and opened fire on it with a cannon. The attack destroyed the drone.

A coast guard ship was then dispatched to the area, carrying a Romanian Navy mine clearance team on board.

Experts are to examine the wreckage and establish details about the origin and purpose of the drone. An operation to survey the area is ongoing.

Recall that on the night of August 20, during Russia’s massive attack on Ukraine, one of the drones entered Romanian airspace and later fell on the territory of the country.
