US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told European allies that security guarantees for Ukraine have become a key requirement in the proposals that Washington has been passing on to Kyiv over the past week.
Politico reports , citing a European diplomat, that these guarantees are seen by the Ukrainian leadership as the foundation of any viable agreement with Russia. NATO members are also clarifying how they can support the country through military assistance and intelligence.
Rubio noted that President Donald Trump plans to negotiate long-term security guarantees later, but they are possible only after the agreement is signed. In this context, Trump will not invite President Volodymyr Zelensky to the White House until the agreement is finalized.
“The Trump administration has repeatedly reaffirmed that any agreement must provide full security and deterrence guarantees for Ukraine. The President’s national security team continues to work with both sides to end the conflict and ensure a lasting, sustainable peace,” said White House Deputy Spokesperson Anna Kelly.
As a reminder, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen named five EU priorities that should be taken into account in a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia.
As reported, US President Donald Trump stated that the only real concession from the Russian Federation in a potential peace agreement with Ukraine could be a complete cessation of hostilities.
