The United States does not plan to impose a ready-made scenario for ending the war on Ukraine or Russia, but is trying to find common ground between the positions of the parties. Washington sees itself as the only real mediator in this process.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio made this statement during a press conference, commenting on a new round of consultations that will start this weekend in Miami.

According to Rubio, the US administration is focused on finding conditions “that both Kyiv and Moscow can live with.” At the same time, he stressed that the United States does not consider the war in Ukraine “ours” because it is taking place on another continent.

“We have interests, we are involved in this war, but this is not our war as such. However, everyone will agree that there is only one country in the world that can talk to both sides and find out if there is a way to end the war – and that is the United States,” Rubio said.

He explained that wars usually end either with the surrender of one of the parties or with negotiated settlements.

“We do not see the surrender of either side in the near future. Therefore, only a negotiated settlement offers a chance to end the war. This means that both sides will get something and both will go to some extent,” the Secretary of State said.

Rubio stressed that the Miami meetings are not intended to dictate terms. The United States wants to understand the needs and expectations of Ukraine and Russia, and the final decisions will be left to the parties to the conflict.

He also added that US President Donald Trump is paying more attention to the war in Ukraine than any other issue, including trade negotiations. According to Rubio, there is progress in the consultations, but the most difficult issues are traditionally left at the end.

It was previously reported that a Ukrainian delegation will hold a new round of security consultations with partners in the United States on December 19.

As a reminder, Ukraine and the United States plan to hold a new round of negotiations as part of the preparation of a potential peace agreement.
