UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres responded to a Russian journalist’s question during a press conference about the possibility of applying the principle of self-determination to temporarily occupied Crimea and Donbas. The UN stated that in this situation, the principle of Ukraine’s territorial integrity prevails.
This is reported by Ukrinform .
It is noted that the Russian journalist asked whether the United Nations could consider the situation with temporarily occupied Crimea and Donbas as one to which the principle of self-determination of peoples could be applied.
The UN Secretary-General explained that there are two key principles of international law — the territorial integrity of states and the self-determination of peoples, but the second principle applies only under certain conditions.
“We have concluded that the principle of self-determination cannot be applied to Crimea and Donbas, so in this situation the principle of the territorial integrity of Ukraine prevails,” said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Heorhiy Tykhyi, commenting on the dialogue, recalled the decision of the UN General Assembly regarding the illegal seizure of Ukrainian territories.
“Russia asked the UN if it recognizes ‘self-determination’ for Donbas, similar to Greenland. Someone should tell these idiots that the UN has already answered: in October 2022, 143 members of the UN General Assembly rejected Russia’s illegal seizure of territory. Bingo card: get out of Ukraine,” said Heorhiy Tykhyi.
The day before, on January 29, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that Russia had requested the UN to recognize the right of the population of the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine to self-determination, comparing this issue to the situation around Greenland.
It is worth adding that during the war against Ukraine, Russia temporarily occupied parts of Donetsk Oblast, parts of Luhansk Oblast, parts of Zaporizhia Oblast, parts of Kherson Oblast, and the Crimean Peninsula.
By the way, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said thatactive work is underway to resolve the territorial issue of Donetsk in US-brokered negotiations to end Russia’s war in Ukraine , calling this disagreement a key issue that is “very difficult” to resolve.
On Tuesday, the Financial Times reported that Washington has told Ukraine that it must sign a peace deal with Russia to receive US security guarantees.
As reported, Washington is considering an offer to Ukraine to give up Donbas in exchange for a $800 billion financing plan for the country’s reconstruction.
