Counterintelligence and investigators of the Security Service of Ukraine recorded an increased radiation background on the wreckage of a Russian strike drone, with which the Russian Federation attacked the Chernihiv region in April 2026.

According to the investigation, these are fragments of an R-60 air-to-air missile discovered near the village of Kamka. It is said that Russian forces could have used it during massive attacks to destroy Ukrainian aircraft intercepting drones.

The SBU reported that during an inspection of the crash site, an elevated level of radiation was recorded.

“During radiation reconnaissance, a gamma radiation level of 12 μSv/h was recorded in the immediate vicinity of the debris, which significantly exceeds the natural radiation background and poses a health hazard,” the SBU noted.

The department also stated that, together with the State Emergency Service and the Defense Forces, the warhead of the missile was neutralized and taken to a radioactive waste storage site.

“The SBU, together with units of the State Emergency Service and the Defense Forces of Ukraine, brought the warhead of the missile to a safe condition and transported it to the storage location,” the report says.

Research has shown that depleted uranium elements may have been used in the design of the Russian missile.

“Striking elements from depleted uranium were detected — in particular, the isotopes Uranium-235 and Uranium-238,” the SBU reported.

A pre-trial investigation under the article on war crimes has been initiated into this fact under the procedural guidance of the Chernihiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office.

The SBU also urged citizens to be careful if they discover debris from downed UAVs or ammunition and not to approach them.

“Do not touch or move such objects. Immediately notify the SBU, the State Emergency Service, or the police,” the department emphasized.
