Russia has begun equipping ships with new electronic warfare systems: will this help against Ukrainian drones?

Russia has begun installing Peroed-M electronic warfare stations on ships of the Baltic and Pacific fleets. According to the expert, even if these systems appear on ships of the Black Sea Fleet, they will not provide Russia with a significant advantage over Ukrainian drones.

A serviceman of the 413th Regiment of the Unmanned Systems Forces “Reid” and an expert at Defense Express, Ivan Kyrychevsky, reported that footage has appeared in the open access, indicating the installation of “Peroed-M” electronic warfare stations on ships of the Baltic and Pacific fleets of the Russian Federation.
According to him, the complex has already been spotted on the Varyag missile cruiser of project 1164 “Atlant”, one of the anti-submarine frigates of project 11540 “Yastreb”, as well as on a number of other ships of the Baltic Fleet.
Kyrychevsky, citing the Polish portal ZBiAM, noted that “Peroed-M” was also installed on:
- anti-submarine corvettes “Urengoi” and “Zelenodolsk” of project 1331M;
- one of the Project 20380 corvettes;
- landing craft of project 21280 “Dugon”;
- basic minesweepers of project 12700;
- nuclear cruiser “Admiral Nakhimov”.
According to the expert, the declared effective range of the complex is up to 2.5 kilometers. He explained that “Peroed-M” was created on the basis of the trench electronic warfare system “Peroed”, which did not provide full protection against FPV drones.

The expert believes that Russia seeks to equip the maximum possible number of ships of its navy with the new complexes. At the same time, the reasons for choosing “Peroyed-M” remain unknown at this time, although one of the factors could be the compact size of the complex.
Kyrychevsky also noted that Peroed-M stations have not yet been spotted on Black Sea Fleet ships. According to him, this may indicate either the lack of relevant photos in the public domain, or that the Russian military is currently relying mainly on firepower to combat air and naval drones.
According to the expert, even if these systems are installed on ships in the Black and Azov Seas, they will not change the situation. He explained this by the fact that Ukrainian FP-1 drones have received an update that allows them to continue flying to a designated target even if the control signal is lost, and also reduces the dependence of the attack outcome on the operator’s actions.
By the way, on the night of July 18, the Armed Forces of Ukraine’s unmanned systems struck another 13 ships of the Russian shadow fleet in the Black and Azov Seas.
As a reminder, the commander of the Unmanned Systems Forces, Robert (“Magyar”) Broddi, reported that 28 vessels of the Russian shadow fleet were hit in the Sea of Azov on the night of July 11.
As reported, on the night of July 14, units of the Unmanned Systems Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine hit 11 Russian ships in the Sea of Azov.
