Russia has modernized its missiles to complicate the work of Ukrainian air defense: how does this affect the effectiveness of Patriot

Yuriy Ignat, a spokesman for the Air Force Command, reported that Russia continues to test modernized missiles in Ukraine, which creates additional challenges for Ukrainian air defense.

He spoke about this on the national telethon.

In particular, we are talking about modernized ballistic and cruise missiles used during massive shelling of Ukrainian cities.

According to Ignat, the updated Russian missiles have more complex flight characteristics, including a quasi-ballistic trajectory, which makes their elimination more problematic.

“It has become more difficult to work with missiles that fly on a quasi-ballistic trajectory. They fluctuate when approaching the target, and this complicates the work of Patriot, because the system operates in automatic mode during ballistics shooting down. Because of this, it is more difficult to calculate the point where the anti-missile should collide or explode near the target,” Ignat explained.

At the same time, he emphasized that the Patriot system remains an effective weapon against Russian attacks, but its capabilities depend on the scale of application and the number of targets.

“If a large number of missiles are flying from different directions, it is impossible to detect all objects simultaneously with one system. You need to have several systems and several radars that will cover the city from different sides,” said a representative of the Air Force.

The modernization of Russian missiles, according to Ignat, is not a new phenomenon. It is a process that has been going on for several months, and Russia has been gradually introducing improved types of weapons, testing their effectiveness in practice during attacks on Ukraine.

As is known, on the night of October 5 (from 8:00 p.m. on October 4) , the enemy launched a combined strike on the territory of Ukraine using strike UAVs, air-, sea-, and ground-based missiles.
