Russia has appointed a new commander of the North group of forces responsible for the Kursk and Kharkov directions. He is Colonel General Yevgeny Nikiforov.
This was reported by Mediazona with reference to the Russian Ministry of Defense.
Previously, the group was commanded by Colonel General Alexander Lapin. Information about his resignation appeared in Z-telegram channels on August 9. Lapin also headed the Center group of forces and was known for his unsuccessful role during the retreat of Russian troops from Liman in the fall of 2022, for which he was publicly criticized by Yevgeny Prigozhin and Ramzan Kadyrov.
The Security Service of Ukraine links Nikiforov to a number of war crimes: it was he, according to the SBU, who gave the order to shoot down a Ukrainian Il-76 aircraft near Luhansk in June 2014, where 49 soldiers died, and also sanctioned a missile strike on the drama theater in Chernihiv in August 2023.
From 2022 to 2024, Nikiforov commanded the Western Military District until its disbandment.
