Russia hides behind a “digital iron curtain”: Russians warned of long-term internet shutdowns

Russians have begun receiving messages warning of long-term disruptions to mobile internet.
This is reported by the Center for Countering Disinformation.
In particular, in Moscow, it was recently recorded that mobile internet was unavailable for 19 days. At the same time, as the Central Data Protection Office suggests, the partial restoration probably indicates intentions to further restrict it.
It is noted that a similar development of events occurred in Russian regions. There, the Internet periodically disappeared and returned, and then the outages became longer.
“However, even among media loyal to the Russian authorities, these innovations cause indignation. In particular, they compare the Internet shutdown to “Stalinism”, indicating that restrictions on the network and mobile communications will turn the country into a technically backward country,” the center said.
At the same time, Russia wants to introduce a “white list” – a list of sites that will be accessible without an Internet connection.
“The ultimate goal of the Russian authorities is to create a ‘digital iron curtain’ to deny Russians access to independent sources of information and to cover the entire population with propaganda. For this reason, the Kremlin easily neglects the well-being of its citizens, condemning the country to technical backwardness,” the CPD explained.
Previously, the WhatsApp messenger was completely blocked in the Russian Federation , and the mobile service’s domain disappeared from the DNS servers of Roskomnadzor.
