Russia is changing tactics: massive attacks should exhaust Ukrainian air defense

Russia has significantly increased the number of air strikes on Ukraine in recent months. The Kremlin is launching more drones and missiles than before, and the main reason for this may be the difficulties of the Russian army on the front.

CNNwrites about this.

According to experts interviewed by the publication, Moscow is increasingly using complex combined attacks. First, dozens or even hundreds of drones fly over Ukraine, and then ballistic and cruise missiles. This tactic allows you to overload the air defense system and increase the number of targets that can break through to the point of impact.

Royal United Services Institute analyst Thomas Whittington believes that the increase in shelling is directly related to the situation on the battlefield.

“A key factor in the increased frequency and scale of air attacks is that Russia is now really struggling to achieve any significant gains on the battlefield,” he said.

In his opinion, the Russian army cannot achieve quick results on the front, so the Kremlin is trying to compensate for this with air strikes.

Despite the increase in the number of attacks, Ukrainian air defense continues to demonstrate high efficiency. Experts note that the Defense Forces maintain approximately the same level of drone interception as before, destroying about 90% of drones.

However, the situation with ballistic missiles is much more complicated. To intercept them, Patriot systems and missiles are needed, which Ukraine lacks.

Yuriy Ignat, a representative of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, stated in a comment to CNN that the problem is not only the number of Russian attacks.

“There are not enough missiles for the Patriot system; too many of them have been used in the Middle East,” he explained.

In addition, according to Ignat, Russian troops are increasingly striking with ballistic missiles at regions that have fewer opportunities to defend against such threats.

CNN notes that Russia explains the massive strikes as a response to Ukrainian operations. However, experts do not agree with this version. They emphasize that large-scale attacks have become a regular part of the Russian campaign and fit into the Kremlin’s long-term strategy.

Its goal is not only to cause destruction, but also to influence the mood of Ukrainians.

“They want to increase pressure on the public,” said Yasir Atalan, a research fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

According to him, Moscow expects that constant shelling, air raids, and a sense of danger can increase public fatigue from the war and create additional pressure on the Ukrainian authorities.

As previously reported, on the night of Tuesday, June 2, Russian occupation forces launched a massive attack on Kyiv . As a result of the shelling, damage was recorded in several areas of the capital, with fatalities and dozens of injuries.

Let us recall that the massive Russian strike on Ukraine on the night of June 2 was not only another attack , but also an attempt by the Kremlin to show strength after a series of painful strikes on Russian territory.
