Russia has stopped publishing population figures, births, deaths, marriages, and divorces since July, in order to avoid drawing attention to the demographic crisis.
This was reported by the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine.
“Russia is hiding demographic statistics because they no longer correlate with propaganda slogans about a ‘great nation,’” the intelligence agency noted.
In 2024, 1.222 million children were born in the Russian Federation – the lowest figure since 1999.
It is noted that in the first quarter of 2025, only 293-294 thousand children were born, which is 2.4% less than in the same period last year, and is the lowest figure in 200 years.
“In addition, mortality in Russia exceeds birth rates: in 2024, the natural population decline was 596.2 thousand people, which is 20.4% more than in 2023,” the SVR noted.
Among the main reasons for the demographic crisis are:
- emigration (up to a million Russians have left the country since February 2022 – ed.);
- increased mortality;
- declining birth rate.
It is noted that the demographic statistics of the Russian Federation do not reflect losses in the war against Ukraine.
“The Russian government is losing not just soldiers, but also a demographic resource: the number of ethnic Russians, whom the Kremlin considers the regime’s support, is rapidly decreasing,” the intelligence officers add.
Recall that in Russia, due to the worsening prospects for an economic slowdown, mass confiscations of assets are being recorded.
As reported, in the first half of 2025 , Russia’s budget deficit amounted to 3.69 trillion rubles (over $46.8 billion), which corresponds to 1.7% of GDP – the figure that the country’s government had forecast for the whole year.
It is also known that by April 2026, if current economic trends continue , a banking collapse may occur in Russia.
