Active expansion work is underway at the Engels-2 military airfield, which is a key facility for Russia’s strategic aviation.
As reported by the AviVector observer, concreting of new areas has begun in the northern part of the base.
It is noted that similar work was completed in the southern sector on September 30, where a concrete strip was laid along the new taxiway. Satellite images and terrain markings indicate the intention to create at least 12 additional aircraft parking lots.

Analysts say the new sites are likely intended to house Tu-95MS and Tu-160 strategic missile carriers, as well as Su-34 frontline aircraft and Su-35 multi-role fighters. Similar infrastructure has previously been spotted at another Russian air base, Diaghilev in the Ryazan region.
The publication recalls that plans to expand Engels-2 became known back in May. The first signs of preparatory work were noticed on March 23, 2025, and since then, construction has only been gaining momentum.
Engels-2 airbase is one of the main hubs of the Russian strategic aviation. It is from there that bombers take off, regularly launching cruise missiles at Ukrainian cities. The base also stores a significant amount of missile and aviation weapons.
The active construction of new parking lots and taxiways may indicate plans to increase combat potential or transfer additional aircraft due to losses or a change in tactics.
As a reminder, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine confirmed a strike on the Engels airfield in the Saratov region of the Russian Federation, a fire in the area of the airfield, and the detonation of ammunition.
As reported, British intelligence stated that the drone attack on the Russian military airfield Engels-2 on the night of March 20 was one of the most effective in 2025, significantly affecting the capabilities of Russian aviation.
