Russia has begun modernizing the Petrozavodsk garrison, a military base in Karelia near the border with Finland. The facility is reportedly preparing to house a significantly larger number of troops.

This is reported by Yle .

According to journalists, the information was obtained based on the analysis of satellite images. They showed that Russian military personnel cleared areas of undergrowth and cut down trees on the territory of the garrison.

Satellite images also show the presence of more than 50 units of military equipment, including trucks and special vehicles. Journalists note that Petrozavodsk is home to a large Russian air base and weapons depot.

Currently, up to 3,000 Russian military personnel are stationed at the base. In addition, Besovets Air Base is used to house about 80 fighter jets.

Military expert Mark Eklund believes that the renovated garrison could be used for a new army corps.

“The garrison being modernized will likely be engaged by a new army corps,” said Mark Eklund.

Journalists recall that in 2024, Russia created the 44th Army Corps in the Republic of Karelia, which has about 15,000 additional soldiers. After training, these soldiers are sent to war against Ukraine.

It is noted that most of the already formed units of the 44th Army Corps are currently fighting in the Kharkiv region.

In addition, north of Karelia, in Kandalaksha, Murmansk Oblast, Russia, construction of a new military camp is underway.

By the way, Finnish Defense Minister Antti Häkkanen warned that Moscow is increasing its military presence near the borders of the European Union and is preparing for a possible new wave of aggression – even when the current conflict in Ukraine ends.

Recall that Russia is actively forming the psychological and informational basis for a possible future war against NATO.
