Russia has launched an online influence campaign ahead of the US midterm elections on November 3. Moscow is trying to sow distrust among Americans and weaken the positions of politicians who support Ukraine.
Politico reports this, citing representatives of the US Congressional Intelligence Committees.
Democratic Senator Mark Warner and Congressman Jim Himes said that US intelligence had prepared a classified report on foreign interference in the election. They received the document earlier this week.
According to Himes, Russia is spreading disinformation online to create a climate of chaos and distrust. In particular, Russian campaigns are aimed at discrediting US government institutions and spreading doubts about the integrity of voting using electronic machines.
Warner added that Moscow is actively using artificial intelligence, which helps create and spread false information more quickly.
Russia pays special attention to American politicians who support Ukraine. Party affiliation does not matter – both Democrats and Republicans can be targeted.
At the same time, the lawmakers did not name specific candidates against whom Russia is conducting information campaigns.
American intelligence also found no evidence that Moscow attempted to hack US election infrastructure or campaign computer networks.
Warner recalled that Russia has been interfering in American electoral processes since at least 2016. Moscow conducted similar campaigns during previous elections.
The report also mentions China and Iran trying to influence the US election. However, according to the congressmen, it is Russia that is conducting the most extensive campaign.
The US midterm elections will be held on November 3, 2026. Americans will elect all 435 members of the House of Representatives and 35 senators.
The election will take place against the backdrop of President Donald Trump’s declining approval ratings. CNN previously reported that his support among his own voters has dropped to an all-time low, and some Republican supporters may vote for Democrats.
