Russia is trying to legitimize elections in the occupied territories: what is known
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has stated that Russia’s parliamentary elections in the occupied territories of Ukraine are illegal. Kyiv stressed that the involvement of international observers does not change the status of these elections and may be an attempt to legitimize their results.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry stated that the results of the vote that Russia plans to hold in the occupied territories in September will have no legal consequences.
“Any vote organized by Russia on the sovereign territory of Ukraine is illegal, and the results of such a vote are invalid and have no legal consequences,” the department said in a statement.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry’s statement came as a mission of observers from the former Soviet Union countries began its work. They are to observe the electoral process and assess whether the procedures meet accepted standards for free and fair elections.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry emphasized that the presence of international observers does not make the Russian elections legal.
The department stated that Russia “is trying to use the international presence in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine to legitimize the result.”
It is worth adding that parliamentary elections in Russia will be held in September. The United Russia party, supported by Russian President Vladimir Putin, and other pro-Russian political forces are expected to maintain their dominance in parliament.
