Russia launched a massive strike on Zaporizhia: drones damaged dozens of houses and shopping centers
On the night of January 2, Russian forces carried out one of the most intense drone attacks in recent times on Zaporizhia and surrounding areas. The strikes resulted in significant destruction of residential and commercial buildings in the city, as well as a fire in a shopping mall.
This was announced by the head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, Ivan Fedorov.
According to him, during the New Year holidays, the enemy did not stop air attacks on the region, and the night drone raid was one of the most massive. A significant number of drones were destroyed by air defense forces on their approach to the city, which made it possible to avoid civilian casualties.
At the same time, at least nine strike drones were able to reach targets within Zaporizhia. Apartment and private buildings, commercial facilities, and elements of urban infrastructure were damaged. As of this morning, dozens of homes and commercial premises were reported to have been destroyed or damaged.
The head of the OVA also noted that during the attack, Russian troops tried to damage the region’s energy system, but as of this morning, power supply was maintained for all consumers.
The State Emergency Service clarified that Zaporizhia was hit by two waves of drone strikes overnight. The first attack occurred late in the evening of January 1, when three fires broke out, including a non-residential extension to a multi-story building and two outbuildings, and debris damaged homes, cars, and road surfaces.
The second wave of the attack occurred at around 2 a.m. on January 2. As a result of the hit, a shopping center caught fire, which rescuers quickly extinguished. After that, the SES sappers examined the area for dangerous drone debris. According to preliminary information, there were no casualties.
