Russia launches new modification of Gerani: drone learns to fly without GPS

Russia has begun using a new modification of the Geran-5 K5 strike drone, which has received an optical autonomous navigation system. Due to its high speed, this jet drone can be perceived by Ukrainian air defense as a missile.

This is reported by the monitoring channel “Colonel General Staff”.

The new version of the Gerani-5 has a modified fuselage and an optical-electronic correction module (OEKS/DSMAC). The system allows the drone to check the route with reference images of the earth’s surface and correct the flight. A similar navigation principle is used in the X-101 cruise missiles.

According to Russian sources, the optical system was called “Susanyn.” It supposedly allows the drone to follow a given route autonomously, without GPS/GLONASS and radio beacons.

It is also claimed that the Geran-5 K5 is capable of continuing its flight even if communication with the operator is lost or under the influence of electronic warfare equipment.

Recall that in August, Russian industry produced about 3,000 Geran-4/5 jet drones per month, which exceeds the output of Geran-2 . Russia is reconfiguring part of its production capacity for new jet drones, despite problems with the supply of engines.

As reported, according to intelligence, the drone is six meters long and has a wingspan of over five meters. The weight of the warhead reaches 90 kilograms, and the flight range allows it to hit targets at a distance of up to 1,000 kilometers . The occupiers have adapted the device for launch from aircraft, which should make its use cheaper and increase its range.
