Russia is considering moving data centers underground in response to the Ukrainian attacks. Such measures are intended to strengthen the protection of digital infrastructure from drone strikes, but the specific timing and scope of the plans have not yet been announced.

The Moscow Times writes about this,

The Ministry of Digital Development of the Russian Federation has approved recommendations for protecting data centers from drone attacks.

According to the document, to protect strategically important facilities, it is proposed to use underground structures, strengthen building structures, and install electronic warfare equipment.

The recommendations include a range of measures, from physical fortification of buildings to data backup and interaction with law enforcement agencies. They apply to data centers regardless of ownership or operating company.

For the most important facilities, they are considering building them underground or in specially protected structures. In addition, they propose reducing the visibility of data centers from the air, installing anti-drone barriers, and using electronic warfare equipment.

A separate set of recommendations concerns the protection of engineering systems. The structures should protect server rooms, cooling equipment, and power supply from shock waves and debris. For critical services, data backup is also provided, which should reduce the risk of long-term disruptions in the operation of digital platforms.

At the same time, additional costs for strengthening data center protection may affect the cost of services. Representatives of the Russian IT market predict that provider tariffs may increase by approximately 10%.

Earlier it was reported thatthe Russian company Yandex suspended the work of the data center in Sasov, Ryazan region, after a drone attack that caused a fire and damaged the infrastructure. In addition, three Russian supercomputers were damaged, and the activity of some Telegram accounts that criticized Ukraine decreased.
