Russia prepares record defense spending in 2027

Russia plans to sharply increase defense spending in 2027 to 17.1 trillion rubles, or about $202.6 billion. This will be the highest figure since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

This was reported by Reuters, citing Russian government documents.

The previous budget plan for 2027 provided for 13.5 trillion rubles for defense. Thus, the new figure is approximately 27% higher.

During 2027–2029, the Kremlin plans to allocate a total of about 50 trillion rubles to defense.

At the same time, the exact amount of Russia’s actual military spending in 2026 is classified. Initially, 12.1 trillion rubles were planned for defense this year.

At the same time, the Russian authorities have worsened the estimate of the federal budget deficit for 2026 – from 1.6% to 3.2% of GDP . Total budget expenditures are expected to increase to 48.6 trillion rubles .

To cover the deficit, the Russian government plans to increase net borrowing to 5 trillion rubles , as well as use 459 billion rubles from the National Welfare Fund. At the same time, the forecast for oil and gas revenues has been reduced from 8.9 to 7.6 trillion rubles.

Recall, earlier “Pryamiy” reported on the approved budget of the Russian Federation for 2026 , in which the total expenditure on the army and law enforcement agencies amounted to 16.84 trillion rubles.
