Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that if the situation around Taiwan escalates, Russia will support China. According to him, the corresponding actions are provided for by bilateral agreements between Moscow and Beijing.

This is reported by Russian media.

Sergey Lavrov answered a question about Russia’s position in the event of an escalation of the situation in the Taiwan Strait. He noted that the procedure for action in such cases is determined by the basic agreement between Russia and the People’s Republic of China.

“As for the possible aggravation of the situation in the Taiwan Strait, the procedure for such cases is prescribed in the Treaty with the PRC on Good-Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation of July 16, 2001, which is the basis for bilateral relations. One of the key principles enshrined in this document is mutual support in matters of protecting state unity and territorial integrity,” said Sergey Lavrov.

The People’s Republic of China considers Taiwan a breakaway province and allows for the possibility of establishing control over it. However, Taiwan has never been under the rule of the Chinese Communist Party.

Moscow and Beijing have intensified cooperation since 2022. After Taiwan joined Western sanctions in solidarity with Ukraine, Russia added it to the list of unfriendly states and territories.

China considers democratically-ruled Taiwan part of its territory, a claim Taipei denies. The United States is legally obligated to provide Taiwan with the means to defend itself, a source of tension between the United States and China.

It was previously reported that journalists analyzed a leak of secret documents and found that Russia agreed to supply China with armored vehicles and train Chinese airborne units in airborne operations , which in theory could be used to attempt to capture key facilities in Taiwan.

Recall that US President Donald Trump refused to approve a $400 million arms package for Taiwan as he tries to negotiate a trade deal and a potential summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

By the way, at the beginning of the year , China began construction of at least five new barges specifically designed for landing troops . This could become part of Beijing’s military strategy in the event of an attempted landing on Taiwan.
