The Italian government has decided to expel two military employees of the Russian embassy who are suspected of involvement in espionage activities.

This was reported by the Center for Countering Disinformation (CDC).

It is known that Russian diplomats Ivan Gorbachev and Mikhail Astakhov were ordered to leave Italian territory within three days.

It is noted that Italian law enforcement officers exposed a network that operated on the territory of the country, undermined its sovereignty and posed a threat to national security.

The Rome prosecutor’s office initiated an investigation, during which it was possible to establish facts of espionage activities, recruitment of former employees of the Italian secret services, as well as the collection and transfer of confidential information to Russian special services.

The collected data included information about military aid to Ukraine, defense plans of the European Union, intelligence agencies of NATO countries, as well as about Italian defense enterprises and joint weapons production with Ukraine.

“The Kremlin systematically uses diplomatic missions as a springboard for recruitment and intelligence. Despite the expulsion of “diplomats”-spies in various European countries, hostile networks continue to operate, creating a real threat to the security of EU states,” the CPD noted.

It was previously reported that Russia has intensified an information campaign aimed at worsening relations between Ukraine and Poland . On the eve of the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Volyn Tragedy, propagandists are distributing fake materials, disguising them as publications of Ukrainian media.
