Russia shelled Poltava and Sumy: railway and energy facilities damaged

On the night of October 7, Russian occupiers launched massive attacks on Ukraine’s energy and transport infrastructure. Poltava and Sumy regions were the worst affected, with destruction, fires, and power outages.

This was announced by the Deputy Prime Minister for the Restoration of Ukraine – Minister of Community and Territorial Development Oleksiy Kuleba on Telegram.

According to him, in Poltava, the locomotive depot, the power supply section responsible for the railway’s power supply, i.e. ensuring the operation of the contact network, and traction substations were hit. Administrative buildings, warehouses, and railway rolling stock were damaged.

“Fires broke out, which were extinguished by rescuers. Fortunately, there were no casualties,” Kuleba said.

Due to the attack, the Kharkiv-Lviv, Lviv-Kharkiv, and Kramatorsk-Lviv trains were temporarily delayed, but now the traffic has been fully restored.

As a result of the hits, an energy facility was damaged, leaving over a thousand households in Poltava and surrounding communities without electricity.

A similar situation was recorded in Sumy. As a result of a night attack, residential buildings were damaged and part of the city was left without electricity.

“Effect elimination headquarters are working on the ground. Specialists are examining the territories, restoring power supply, and helping people,” the vice prime minister specified.

According to him, rail traffic has been stabilized, and critical infrastructure is gradually returning to operation.

“The enemy’s goal is obvious – Russia is trying to weaponize cold and darkness. The enemy wants to disrupt the heating season and paralyze the work of Ukrzaliznytsia, which remains a critical artery of the country. We continue to restore and move forward – despite everything,” Kuleba emphasized.

As a reminder, on October 7, Russian troops carried out a massive attack with Shahed strike drones on Kharkiv and Poltava regions .

Also in the morning, the occupiers launched a drone strike on the city of Sumy, hitting a civilian infrastructure facility. Part of Sumy was left without electricity .
