Russia threatens Ireland: the country is vulnerable due to weak defense

Security issues in Europe have once again come into focus due to rising geopolitical tensions and Russian activity.

This is reported by The Telegraph.

Experts are increasingly pointing to weaknesses in the European defense system, especially in countries that lack sufficient resources to detect and neutralize threats.

Senator and former army captain Tom Clonan has called Ireland “the weakest link in Europe in terms of security, defense and intelligence.” He said the country lacks modern sensors and weapons capable of responding effectively to threats, leaving it “absolutely defenseless and provocatively weak.”

Analysts stress that the potential risks to Ireland are largely not related to direct military invasion, but to activities in the so-called “gray zone” – in particular, networks of submarine cables and gas pipelines in coastal waters. About three-quarters of key transatlantic cables pass through or near the Irish border.

Last November, the Russian spy ship Yantar was spotted near cables used by Microsoft and Google, whose European offices are based in Ireland. The country lacks modern radar and sonar systems and often learns about Russian activities only from allies, including the UK.

The publication also recalls the incident in December 2023, when a British warship and helicopter forced a Russian submarine to leave territorial waters near Cork Harbor.

Recall that during Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to Ireland, four unidentified military-type drones followed the route of the presidential plane.
