In Russia, a mandatory basic course on unmanned systems will be introduced in all transport higher education institutions from September 1, 2026. At least 150,000 university students and more than 250,000 young people, including college students, will fall under the new program.

This was reported by the Center for Countering Disinformation.

The department noted that the Russian authorities are increasing the militarization of the higher education system, integrating educational institutions into the state’s military system.

According to the Center, along with the mass recruitment of students into drone units, the Russian authorities are moving to compulsory training. Starting September 1, 2026, a mandatory course on drone systems will be introduced at 19 transport universities and 86 of their branches.

The CPD reported that the program will cover at least 150,000 students of higher education institutions, and together with colleges, more than 250,000 young people who will be required to master the skills of working with unmanned systems.

It is emphasized that such steps indicate the further militarization of Russian education and the use of educational institutions to train personnel for the war against Ukraine.

It was previously reported that the Russian Ministry of Defense has launched a media campaign to recruit technical students for the war against Ukraine.
