The United States has recorded an attempt by Russia to gain covert access to urban infrastructure. This is evidenced by a cyberattack on an American engineering company that Russian hackers carried out through the RomCom and SocGholish tools – channels commonly used by criminal groups.

This was reported by the Center for Countering Disinformation.

Hackers were able to penetrate the company’s systems and obtain data on access and internal processes of contractors working with water supply, transportation, and emergency response networks.

The use of interconnected SocGholish-RomCom channels shows that Russia is deliberately masquerading as cybercriminals. This makes it difficult to determine the origin of the attack and delays the response of US intelligence agencies.

The choice of an engineering company as a target suggests that Moscow is looking for opportunities for future acts of sabotage in the United States. Even a failed hack gives Russia information about how American cyber teams are responding, making U.S. cyberspace a training ground for practicing new attack scenarios.

It was previously reported that four people suspected of spying for Russia were detained in France.

As a reminder, in Kyiv, the Security Service of Ukraine detained Chinese spies who were collecting secret documents about the Ukrainian Neptune missile .
