Russia has tripled production of ballistic missiles for its Iskander-M tactical missile systems thanks to components supplied by China, allowing Moscow to resume and scale up military production despite Western sanctions.

This was reported by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).

Analysts say China has been a key factor in the revival of Russian defense production after Western sanctions were imposed. Growing cooperation between Beijing and Moscow has provided Russia with access to critical goods.

According to the think tank, in 2024, trade turnover between China and Russia reached almost $250 billion, while in 2022 this figure was $190 billion. China’s share in Russia’s foreign trade increased to 33.8%, compared to 11.3% in 2014.

A special role in this process is played by dual-use goods that Russia uses for military purposes. These include, in particular:

  • computer chips;
  • machines;
  • radars;
  • sensors;
  • sensors.

Analysts emphasize that Russia is not capable of producing these components in the required volumes on its own.

In addition, in 2024, China accounted for 70% of Russian imports of ammonium perchlorate, a critical component of ballistic missile fuel. This, according to the Center for Strategic and International Studies, directly affected the growth of missile production for the Iskander-M complexes.

By the way, China is sending Russia the equipment needed to create the Oreshnik hypersonic missile , capable of carrying nuclear warheads. This weapon is used by Vladimir Putin to threaten the West.

It is worth adding that Russia has only 3–4 medium-range ballistic missiles of the Oreshnik type . Moscow plans to launch these missiles into mass production as early as 2026.

It was previously reported that China began to purchase Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) more actively since the end of last year, exceeding the expected level of demand from the continent’s leading importer.
