Russia used the new Geranium-5 attack drone against Ukraine for the first time: details
In early 2026, during combined air attacks against Ukraine, Russian forces used the new Geran-5 attack drone for the first time.
The Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine reported this.
The new UAV is approximately 6 meters long and has a wingspan of up to 5.5 meters. Unlike previous versions of the Geranium series, the aircraft is built using a standard aerodynamic design. At the same time, a significant number of key components are shared with other drones in this line.
Geranium-5 was equipped with a 12-channel Kometa satellite navigation system, a Raspberry Pi-based tracker, and 3G/4G modems. The drone also features a Telefly jet engine, similar to the one used on Geranium-3 but with increased thrust.
The warhead weighs approximately 90 kilograms, and the stated range is up to 1,000 kilometers.
Like previous models in this series, the Geran-5 can hardly be considered a Russian development. Significant design and technological similarities have been noted with the Iranian Karrar drone.
According to available information, the Russian side is also exploring options for deploying this drone from aircraft carriers, including Su-25 aircraft. This approach should increase the drone’s range and reduce its operating costs. Separately, the possibility of equipping the Geran-5 with R-73 air-to-air missiles to counter Ukrainian aircraft is being considered.
Specialists from the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine are already conducting a comprehensive study of the new UAV used by the enemy. A detailed analysis of the design, components, and electronics will soon be published in the “Weapons of War” section of the War&Sanctions portal.
