Russia has stepped up cyberattacks on Ukrainian government institutions and commercial companies, using artificial intelligence to speed up the preparation and execution of attacks. Ukraine is exploring the use of AI to counter such threats.
This was stated by the Minister of Digital Transformation of Ukraine, Oksana Ferchuk, during the Technovation conference within the framework of the Kyiv International Economic Forum.
According to the minister, Russia has stepped up cyber operations after failing to physically destroy Ukraine’s digital infrastructure. Now, not only the public sector, but also business is under the spotlight.
To counter such attacks, Ukraine is considering the use of artificial intelligence tools. At the same time, one of the priorities remains the development of cyber education and the expansion of educational programs, in particular, on working with AI models.
In the public sector, the Ministry of Digital Affairs calls for the completion of the formation of specialized cyber teams in the coming weeks. Ferchuk advises business representatives to first of all take care of having a specialist or team responsible for the security of information systems.
The minister recommends that large businesses, especially companies with a large number of users and information systems, check whether they use professional cyber protection tools.
She also emphasized that a team of specialists alone is not enough. Effective protection requires specialized tools that connect to employees’ computers and allow them to constantly monitor their status.
It was previously reported that a hacking group affiliated with the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces (GRU) carried out a large-scale cyberattack on defense enterprises in a NATO country , including a warship manufacturer and an aircraft construction company. The attackers gained unauthorized access to internal networks and technical documentation of contractors performing state and defense orders.
