Russia was attacked by drones at night: a refinery caught fire in Saratov, explosions thundered near Engels

On the night of Tuesday, September 8, the Saratov region of Russia was attacked by drones. In Saratov, after a series of explosions, a large fire broke out in the area of an industrial zone, and the main target, according to the ASTRA OSINT project, could have been the Saratov oil refinery. The regional authorities reported damage to civilian infrastructure and casualties.

The attack was announced by the governor of the Saratov region, Roman Busargin. At around 03:30 he warned residents about the threat of UAVs, and about an hour later he announced that civilian infrastructure had been damaged and there were casualties as a result of the attack. Emergency services are working at the scene.

Local residents reported loud explosions and flashes, followed by a fire in the industrial zone. Footage from the scene was also shared by Russian and Ukrainian monitoring resources.

According to ASTRA, the Saratov refinery could have been hit. Videos published by eyewitnesses show a fire on the territory of the enterprise. At the same time, the Russian authorities did not directly name the plant as the target of the attack.

Saratov Oil Refinery is part of Rosneft. The enterprise specializes in oil refining and the production of fuels and lubricants. According to data provided in open sources, its capacity is about 4.8 million tons of oil per year.

Explosions were also heard in Engels, near Saratov. Local residents reported explosions, flashes in the sky, and the operation of air defense systems.

The strategic military airfield Engels-2, which Russia uses to base long-range aircraft, is located near the city. However, local authorities have not separately confirmed that the airfield was hit during this attack.

Due to the threat of drones, the Saratov airport temporarily restricted the arrival and departure of aircraft.

The number of drones that attacked the area, as well as the exact extent of the damage, have not yet been reported.

As a reminder, on the night of Thursday, July 16, the Saratov region of Russia came under a massive drone attack. The cities of Engels and Saratov were under attack, in particular the Engels-2 military airfield and an electrical substation.
