Russia must feel constant pressure so that the negotiations are not formal, but productive,” the EC President noted. She added that Europe continues to “raise the price of Russia’s war” and that the prepared sanctions are aimed at a long-term blocking of Russian assets in the EU.
In addition, von der Leyen highlighted two other key areas on the path to peace: security guarantees for Ukraine and support for its economic recovery. At the same time, she said, the final resolution of territorial issues during a peace agreement should remain in the hands of Kyiv.
The Head of the European Commission emphasized that Europe will remain a reliable partner for Ukraine: “We are ready to provide about two-thirds of Ukraine’s financial needs for the next two years – approximately 90 billion euros. Therefore, the discussions at the European Council this week will be of key importance.”
