Russian agent detained in Odessa during attempted assassination of Navy officer

In Odessa, law enforcement officers foiled an assassination attempt on a high-ranking officer of the Ukrainian Navy. The Russian agent was detained right during the attempted attack.

This was reported by the Security Service of Ukraine.

According to the investigation, the killer prepared for the attack in advance and waited for his victim near the residential complex where the military man lives.

“On the day of the assassination attempt, the killer with a pistol and two loaded magazines took up a position near the exit from the residential complex,” the SBU reported.

In order not to arouse suspicion, the man pretended to be repairing his bicycle and waited for the officer’s car in a balaclava.

When the car pulled up, he abruptly took action.

“When the car approached the exit, the agent threw the bicycle under the wheels of the car and tried to open fire on the driver,” the special service noted.

At that moment, he was detained by counterintelligence officers and special forces. It turned out that the suspect had been monitored in advance and all his actions were documented.

As law enforcement officials have determined, the attacker is a 37-year-old foreigner from the Balkans who was recruited by Russian intelligence services.

He arrived in Ukraine in February 2026 under the guise of a tourist, and later went to Odessa to carry out tasks.

“Upon arrival in the port city, the agent received from the curator the geolocation of the cache, from which he took a pistol with a silencer and cartridges,” the SBU reported.

After that, he followed the officer, studied his routes, and agreed with the supervisor on a location for the attack.

To remain unnoticed, the man constantly changed rented accommodation and hotels.

The foreigner has already been informed of suspicion of attempted terrorist acts. The court has chosen a preventive measure for him – detention.

He faces up to 12 years in prison.

The operation was carried out by SBU officers together with the regional prosecutor’s office.
