Russia’s military actions have resulted in damage to substations critical to the nuclear safety and security of Ukrainian nuclear power plants.

This was stated in a report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

According to the agency, the South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant and the Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant lost access to one of their external power lines.

Due to the shelling, the IAEA team at the Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant was forced to take refuge in a hotel shelter for several hours. At the Rivne Nuclear Power Plant, the power of two of the four power units was reduced at the request of the grid operator.

“Threats to nuclear security remain very real and persistent. I reiterate my call for maximum military restraint near nuclear facilities and respect for the seven fundamental principles of nuclear security,” said IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.
