Since the start of the full-scale war, the Ukrainian military has officially recorded more than 13,300 cases of the Russian army using chemical munitions. The Defense Ministry claims that the use of banned substances has become a “regular tactic” for the occupiers on the battlefield.

This was announced by Colonel Valeriy Weber, Deputy Head of the Main Department of Mine Action, Civil Protection and Environmental Safety, during a meeting of the Information Exchange Group on Technical Assistance to Ukraine in Chisinau.

According to representatives of the Ukrainian delegation, if in 2023 cases of the use of chemicals were isolated, then since 2024 the situation has changed dramatically.

“The intensity of chemical attacks has increased rapidly,” and as of the first half of 2026, the level of use of such munitions “remains consistently high across the entire front line,” the Ministry of Defense noted.

During the meeting, the Ukrainian side called on the G7 countries to strengthen support in the field of chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear security. This includes, in particular, additional equipment for radiation monitoring, responding to possible threats, and improving the environmental safety of military facilities.

Colonel Valeriy Weber also presented to the partners several projects for which Ukraine expects to receive funding and technical assistance.

The G7 countries are currently working on the submitted proposals. The Ukrainian side hopes that the partners will help strengthen the defense of the Defense Forces against the backdrop of the increasing number of chemical attacks by Russia.
