A hacking group affiliated with the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces (GRU) has carried out a large-scale cyberattack on defense enterprises in a NATO country, including a warship manufacturer and an aircraft construction company. The attackers gained unauthorized access to internal networks and technical documentation of contractors performing state and defense orders.

This is reported by GuildHall .

According to the results of the investigation by cybersecurity experts, the goal of the attack was to obtain confidential data about military developments. In particular, the hackers tried to collect information about warship blueprints, aircraft characteristics, and advanced weapons systems.

According to experts, the attackers used sophisticated infiltration methods that allowed them to remain unnoticed in protected corporate networks for a long time.

The affected companies are conducting an urgent review of the compromised systems in collaboration with national cybersecurity authorities and relevant NATO structures. The measures are aimed at localizing the effects of the attack and eliminating vulnerabilities.

As NATO and defense contractors step up protection of critical infrastructure, the leak of sensitive technical information poses security risks to military projects.

Analysts warn that cyberattacks and other hybrid operations against the Western defense sector may continue amid worsening relations between Russia and Western countries.

As a reminder, hackers gained unauthorized access to the US Department of Defense personnel database and stole confidential data of nearly three million people. Among the compromised information were Social Security numbers and information about military and civilian personnel positions.
