Russian military aircraft approached South Korea: Seoul scrambled fighter jets

On Wednesday, August 26, a new incident involving Russian military aircraft near South Korea was reported. Several Russian aircraft briefly entered the South Korean air defense identification zone, after which Seoul scrambled its fighter jets.
This was reported by the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the South Korean Armed Forces (JCS), Yonhap reports.
Russian aircraft were spotted near the country’s eastern islands on August 25. The Korean military tracked their movements before entering the identification zone and put fighter jets on alert in advance.
“The South Korean military detected the Russian warplanes before they entered the air defense zone and deployed Air Force fighter jets to prepare for any possible contingencies,” the JCS said in a statement.
The Russian planes did not stay in this zone for long and left it on their own. According to the South Korean side, there was no direct violation of the country’s airspace.
The JCS separately explained the difference between the air defense identification zone and the state’s airspace. The former is created for early recognition of foreign aircraft and prevention of possible incidents, but is not legally the territory of the country.
This is not the first such incident in recent times for South Korea. In late June, the militaries of the countries also recorded the simultaneous appearance of Chinese and Russian combat aircraft in this area. At that time, there were about ten aircraft, which later left the area.
