American lawmakers have introduced a bipartisan bill to the Senate that would impose sanctions on the purchase or facilitation of imports of oil and petroleum products from Russia.

This was reported by the Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States, Olga Stefanishyna, on her Facebook.

The document was called the “Decreasing Russian Oil Profits Act of 2025” and was initiated by Republican Senators D. McCormick and J. Hasted, as well as Democratic Senators E. Warren and K. Coons.

According to the ambassador, the authors of the bill emphasized that the purchase of Russian oil finances the war against Ukraine, and any countries, companies, or financial intermediaries that facilitate such trade should be aware of the risk of losing access to the US financial system.

The bill creates a legal framework for increasing sanctions pressure on Russia’s oil revenues. If passed, US President Donald Trump would be required to impose sanctions within 90 days against individuals and entities involved in importing Russian oil.

“The list of individuals and companies will be formed by the Minister of Finance after consultations with the Secretary of State. This initiative once again demonstrates strong bipartisan support for economic pressure on the aggressor,” Ambassador Stefanishyna concluded.

Recall, on Monday, December 15, the Council of the European Union expanded restrictions against the Russian “shadow fleet” , imposing sanctions against five more individuals and four organizations.

As reported, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree on the implementation of the NSDC decision to impose sanctions against 656 naval vessels that are part of Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet.” This is the largest sanctions package ever imposed against this part of the Russian fleet.
