Russian propaganda intensified ahead of elections in Latvia

Ahead of the Latvian Seimas elections on October 3, pro-Kremlin resources are increasingly promoting messages favorable to Russia. They support some Latvian politicians and try to discredit others.

This was reported by the Center for Countering Disinformation.

The Latvian Defense Bureau Satversme noted that Russia-related resources positively cover political forces that call themselves “defenders of the Russian-speaking population.” Such politicians also oppose sanctions and restrictions on the transit of Russian goods.

The situation is the opposite with those who support Ukraine and oppose Russia. Their statements are ridiculed, called “Russophobic,” and manipulations are used to worsen the attitude towards these politicians.

Separately, pro-Kremlin resources are trying to convince Latvians that the country’s internal problems allegedly arose due to sanctions against Russia and aid to Ukraine.

The Center for Countering Disinformation notes that in this way Moscow is trying to create a favorable information background for itself on the eve of the vote.
