The court verdict against former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and the deputy head of the State Protection Department has entered into legal force.

This was reported by the Prosecutor General’s Office.

It is known that the Kyiv Court of Appeal did not satisfy the defense’s appeals and left the verdict unchanged.

Thus, Yanukovych was sentenced to 15 years in prison for organizing the illegal smuggling of people across the state border and inciting desertion.

He was sentenced for a set of crimes, including treason and aiding and abetting Russia in the war against Ukraine.

Instead, the former deputy head of the probation service was sentenced to 10 years in prison for organizing the illegal smuggling of people across the state border and desertion.

Prosecutors managed to prove that in 2014, the former president, acting in collusion with another defendant, with the assistance of Russian representatives, crossed the state border by air and smuggled 20 more people to the Russian Federation.

As noted, the flight in question was operated outside the air traffic control points.

“The convicts flew in three Russian military helicopters under the control of a pilot of the Russian Armed Forces from the vicinity of the village of Urzuf, Mangush district, Donetsk region, to a military airfield in the city of Yeysk (Russia). The route then ran through the city of Anapa, and later on a military transport aircraft provided by the Russian Armed Forces to the military airfield “Gvardiyskoye” on the territory of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea,” the UCP said.

Subsequently, the fugitive president decided to permanently leave the territory of Ukraine.

At the same time, he incited the desertion and departure from the country of the UDO soldiers who provided him with personal protection – some of them left to serve in the Russian Federation.

Earlier, the court found former Prime Minister Mykola Azarov guilty of high treason in absentia , sentencing him to 15 years in prison with confiscation of property.
