Russia’s car market is floundering: June passenger car production fell by almost a third

In June 2025, passenger car production in Russia decreased by 28.2% compared to the same period last year, to 45 thousand units.

Such data was published by Rosstat, The Moscow Times reports.

For comparison, in May the decline was 18.5% year-on-year. According to the results of the first half of 2025, the total production of passenger cars decreased by 2.1% – to 326 thousand units.

Experts say one of the key reasons for the decline is the high discount rate, which makes it difficult for the population to access car loans. In addition, the disposal fee, which increases the final cost of cars, has a negative impact.

Against this backdrop, market participants are forecasting a decline in sales and production volumes of at least 25% by the end of the year. This comes after a brief period of recovery that began in 2023.

As reported, gasoline prices on Russian exchanges have been rising sharply over the past two weeks and are approaching a record high.
