Russia’s Night Attack: Casualties and Destruction in Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, and Odessa Oblasts

On the night of January 22, the Russian occupation army again attacked Ukraine with attack drones. The shelling in the Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, and Odesa regions resulted in civilian casualties and significant damage to civilian infrastructure.

Several settlements in the Dnipro region came under attack. In Kryvyi Rih, according to the chairman of the city’s defense council, Oleksandr Vilkul, the enemy targeted the city with a drone overnight and in the morning. A private home was partially destroyed, and a fire broke out but was quickly extinguished. A 70-year-old woman was injured and received necessary medical attention.

In Pavlohrad, a drone attack damaged eight private homes and four cars, according to Oleksandr Ganzha, head of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Police Department. Russian drones also attacked the Vasylkivska community in the Synelnyky district. An 81-year-old woman was injured and hospitalized in moderate condition. The strike caused fires and damaged an office building and a gas pipeline.

In Zaporizhzhia, according to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, one person was injured in a drone attack. One of the city’s shopping centers was damaged, and rescuers extinguished the fire. Damage to residential buildings was reported in another area of the city.

The Odesa region was also hit that night. According to Oleg Kiper, head of the Odesa Special Operations Command, an enemy drone struck between the 18th and 19th floors of an apartment building in the Odesa district without detonating. The building’s façade and windows were damaged, as were nearby cars. Fifty-eight people, including eight children, were evacuated from the building.

A Shahed-type drone crashed in Chernihiv. According to Dmitry Brizhinsky, head of the Chernihiv Regional Air Defense Agency, the drone did not explode and there were no injuries.

According to the Ukrainian Air Force, on the night of January 22, Russia used 94 Shahed, Gerber, and other attack UAVs in Ukraine. As of 9:00 AM, air defense forces had neutralized 80 enemy drones. Ten drone hits were recorded at 10 locations, and debris from downed UAVs fell at four more locations.
