US President Donald Trump had no obligation to intervene in Russia’s war against Ukraine, but he chose to do so – and now the conflict is increasingly turning into his own war.

British journalist and international security editor Nick Paton Walsh states this in a CNN article.

Vladimir Putin started this war. Joe Biden did not stop it. But this week it is turning into Donald Trump’s war,” the author notes.

The journalist points out that Trump has recently begun to realize the reality: Russian President Vladimir Putin does not seek peace, and Ukraine urgently needs weapons. That is why Trump will have to make one of the most important decisions in the conflict this week.

The talk is of the possible introduction of secondary sanctions – in particular energy tariffs on consumers of Russian oil and gas. This is a painful decision that could have economic consequences for both the US and its allies. Trump could also take tougher measures against India and China, the main importers of Russian energy, potentially shaking up global energy markets.

An alternative, Walsh notes, could be diplomatic maneuvering. Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff is already preparing for a visit to Moscow, where he is expected to offer suggestions for compromise. It is possible that Trump himself will agree to a personal meeting with Putin — a symbolic move that would only highlight his involvement in the war.

The author of the publication recalls the words of former US Secretary of State Colin Powell: if the US broke something, it is responsible for it. And Trump, although he promotes the idea of an isolationist course “America First”, will not be able to avoid responsibility on a global scale.

“Trump says he wants to end wars. But desire is not enough. Ukrainians want to live without air raid sirens. And Putin, with his maximalist demands, offers only the capitulation of Ukraine,” Walsh notes.

He concludes: Russia’s war against Ukraine has been a test of Trump’s presidency and the defining conflict since 9/11. Its outcome will impact European security and China’s aggressiveness for decades to come.

“China needs Russia to win. Europe understands this and is increasing its defense. The question is whether Donald Trump understands this and is ready to make tough but necessary decisions,” the journalist concludes.

By the way, US President Donald Trump said that he is no longer interested in meeting with Russian dictator Putin.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump announced a new deadline for the head of the Kremlin Vladimir Putin, during which a ceasefire must be reached in Ukraine . The new ultimatum period was 10-12 days.

Recall that on July 28, US President Donald Trump said he planned to shorten the time Russian dictator Vladimir Putin had given for a ceasefire in Ukraine. The day before, Donald Trump’s administration announced that it would impose secondary sanctions and tariffs against Russia if a ceasefire was not reached in Ukraine within 50 days.
