The European Union may agree on new sanctions against Russia in the coming days. This is the 19th package of restrictions being prepared in response to the war against Ukraine.

This was reported by Radio Liberty correspondent Rikard Jozwiak.

“European leaders will not adopt sanctions at the Copenhagen summit today, but there is hope that EU ambassadors will approve them at a meeting on Friday,” the journalist noted.

On October 1, an informal EU summit will be held in the Danish capital, and the next day, a summit of the European Political Community will be held, which will be attended by leaders of candidate countries, including Ukraine.

Despite the fact that today’s summit is informal and without official decisions, participants are discussing a number of critical issues:

the creation of a “drone wall” on the EU’s eastern border;

a mechanism for using frozen assets of the Russian Federation to provide assistance to Ukraine;

a new package of sanctions against Russia.

As a reminder, the European Union is preparing another — already strengthened — package of sanctions against Russia, which will cover key areas: energy, financial services, and international trade.

As reported, the European Commission has prepared a document proposing to change the mechanism for adopting sanctions against Russia. This involves moving from the principle of unanimity to qualified majority voting in order to avoid blocking by Hungary.
