Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey have signed a joint defense agreement, boosting security cooperation amid rising military tensions in the Middle East. The document stipulates that an armed attack on one of the three countries will be considered an attack on all participating states.

The agreement was signed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Mecca.

A statement from the Pakistani Foreign Ministry noted that the agreement reflects the shared desire of the three states to strengthen collective security and promote peace, security, and stability in the region and beyond.

The agreement, which came after nearly a year of negotiations, was signed in Mecca, one of Islam’s holiest sites, underscoring the symbolic significance of the agreements.

Saudi Arabia and Pakistan have maintained military ties for decades. Pakistan provides training and technical assistance to Saudi forces, while Turkey and Pakistan cooperate in naval and air force training.

In 2023, Saudi Arabia agreed to purchase Turkish drones. Ankara called the deal Turkey’s largest defense export contract at the time.

The agreements were made amid a worsening security situation in the region, with Saudi Arabia under attack from Iran, as well as Tehran-allied forces in Yemen and armed groups in Iraq.

Representatives of Turkey and Pakistan, for their part, are interested in reducing the level of regional tensions, which pose risks to their security and economies.
