SBU announces suspicion to Kadyrov in absentia

The SBU has announced in absentia suspicion of Ramzan Kadyrov for committing war crimes. The investigation has collected new evidence of his involvement in the cruel treatment of Ukrainian prisoners of war.

The SBU press service reported this.

According to the case materials, Kadyrov openly stated that he ordered his fighters not to take Ukrainian soldiers prisoner, but to shoot them on the battlefield. In addition, he ordered that prisoners be used as a “human shield” – sending them to the roofs of military facilities in Grozny to provide cover from attacks by Ukrainian drones.

Such actions constitute a gross violation of international humanitarian law and the norms of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. Based on this evidence, Kadyrov has been notified in absentia of suspicion under Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (war crimes).

Earlier, in August 2022, the investigation had already charged him with waging an aggressive war, justifying armed aggression and encroaching on the territorial integrity of Ukraine.

Measures are currently underway to hold Kadyrov accountable for his crimes against Ukraine and its citizens. The investigation is being carried out under the procedural guidance of the Office of the Prosecutor General.

Earlier, the head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, known for his loyalty to Vladimir Putin, almost died while swimming at a popular Turkish resort.
