The Security Service of Ukraine has detained businessman Vasyl Vesely, whose name has previously appeared in a number of high-profile journalistic investigations into control over large state and industrial assets.

Law enforcement sources reported the detention of UP. Official details of the case and the grounds for the detention are not being disclosed at this time.

The name of Vasyl Vesely gained wide publicity after the publication of the so-called “Mindich tapes.” The recordings, which were made public by journalists, discussed possible mechanisms for gaining control over one of the largest petrochemical enterprises in the country, Karpatneftekhim.

Previously, the businessman himself denied any ties to the Office of the President and claimed that he had nothing to do with political influence on the activities of the enterprise.

“I don’t have any acquaintances in the President’s Office, but I visit the government quarter because I live there,” Vesely stated during a conversation with journalists.

The businessman also rejected accusations of influence over the state-owned Sense Bank. According to him, after the institution was nationalized, he worked there exclusively on a volunteer basis.

“I work at the bank on a volunteer basis,” he emphasized.

At the same time, journalistic investigations linked Vesely to the processes surrounding Karpatneftekhim and personnel decisions at Sense Bank. After the emergence of new information, law enforcement officers began checking individual facts that could be of interest to the investigation.

The SBU is not commenting on the details of the detention at this time. It is expected that law enforcement officers will soon release official information about the case and possible suspects.
