SBU exposed GRU spies who recorded the consequences of the Oreshnik strike
Law enforcement officers detained two people suspected of gathering intelligence for Russia after the Oreshnik missile strike on the Lviv region on the night of January 8-9, 2026.
This was reported by the press service of the SBU and the Prosecutor General’s Office.
According to the special service, counterintelligence exposed a 64-year-old resident of Mukachevo, recruited remotely by Russian military intelligence (GRU), and his 22-year-old neighbor, an unemployed man, who directly collected information on the spot.
After the shelling, the junior agent arrived in the Lviv region, toured the damaged locations, took photos of them, and marked the coordinates on Google Maps. He passed the information he gathered to a senior accomplice in Mukachevo, who reported directly to the curator from the Russian GRU.
The SBU detained both suspects simultaneously: the older one – in Mukachevo at his place of residence, the younger one – “red-handed” while photographing objects in the Lviv region, in particular on the territory of the local airport.
The investigation established that the agents purposefully photographed and recorded military and critical infrastructure facilities in Ukraine: airports, railway junctions, and other strategic points. The information collected was planned to be used in Russian information and psychological operations and to prepare new shelling of the region.
During the searches, electronic devices containing evidence of work for the GRU were seized from the detainees, and conversations between one of the agents and the supervisor were intercepted. The materials have been included in the criminal proceedings.
Investigators informed the detainees of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (high treason committed under martial law). The agents face life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
As a reminder, on the night of January 9, Lviv region was hit by a missile strike , which hit a critical infrastructure facility. After the attack, fires and gas supply disruptions were recorded in some areas of the region.
Subsequently, videos of the alleged moment of arrival and the consequences of the strike appeared online, which are linked to the use of the Russian Oreshnik ballistic missile.
As reported, the Security Service published a photo of the wreckage of the Oreshnik ballistic missile , which the Russian army used to strike the territory of Ukraine on the night of January 9.
