The SBU counterintelligence prevented a large-scale terrorist attack in Ivano-Frankivsk, which, according to the investigation, was being prepared by Russian special services. The occupants planned to carry out two explosions in the courtyard of a residential complex: the first in the parking lot, and the second after rescuers, medics, law enforcement officers, and local residents arrived at the scene.
This was reported by the Security Service of Ukraine.
According to the intelligence service, to prepare the terrorist attack, the Russians recruited a local unemployed man who was looking for quick money in Telegram channels. On the instructions of the curators, he rented an apartment with a view of the site of the upcoming explosion, secretly installed a phone for remote surveillance, and began preparing improvised explosive devices.
“After the explosion and the arrival of local residents, law enforcement officers, ambulances, and rescuers at the scene, the terrorists planned to remotely detonate a second explosive device with shrapnel, disguised nearby,” the SBU reported.
According to the intelligence agency, the explosives were ordered to be disguised as kitchen pots. Each device was to contain about six kilograms of explosives, detonators, and hundreds of metal bolts to increase the number of possible victims.
The SBU noted that counterintelligence not only thwarted the terrorist attack, but also documented the entire process of its preparation and identified the Russian special services officers who coordinated the crime. Investigative actions are currently ongoing.
As a reminder, the Security Service of Ukraine prevented a terrorist attack in the center of Kyiv by detaining two Russian agents who were preparing an assassination attempt on a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. According to the investigation, the Russian special services planned to blow up the serviceman’s car near Independence Square, which could have led to numerous civilian casualties.
As reported, the Security Service of Ukraine and the National Police prevented a terrorist attack near one of the administrative buildings in the center of Kyiv and detained two FSB agents . After planting the explosive device, the suspects tried to flee to Russia through Belarus.
