SBU prevented a terrorist attack in the Odessa region: a Russian agent planned to blow up an administrative building

In the Odessa region, counterintelligence of the Security Service of Ukraine exposed a Russian agent who was planning to carry out a terrorist attack. In the Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi district, a man was detained who was preparing to blow up the administrative building of one of the state institutions in Izmail.
This was reported to the SBU.
According to the investigation, the man was supposed to plant a homemade explosive device with a capacity of 10 kg of TNT equivalent near the administrative building. To increase the damage, it was planned to be filled with metal screws and bolts.
Russian intelligence officers were planning to remotely detonate explosives during rush hour to cause as many civilian casualties as possible.
The SBU noted that in this way the Russians planned to destabilize the socio-political situation in southern Ukraine.
Law enforcement officers uncovered the preparation of the terrorist attack in advance. The agent was detained in his own apartment as he was finishing assembling the explosive device.
According to the case materials, the man was recruited by Russian special services in July of this year. He was looking for money in Telegram channel chats and agreed to an offer to receive money from representatives of the Russian Federation.
After being recruited, the agent received step-by-step instructions from the curator on how to make explosives and purchased the necessary components. For remote detonation, he equipped the device with a mobile phone, to which the Russian side had remote access.
SBU investigators informed the detainee of suspicion under Part 1 of Article 14, Part 2 of Article 258 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — preparation for a terrorist act.
The man is currently being held without bail. He faces up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property.
The operation was carried out by SBU officers in the Odessa region under the coordination of the SBU Counterintelligence Department and the procedural leadership of the regional prosecutor’s office.
It was previously reported that the SBU exposed a criminal group that was preparing a series of terrorist attacks, arsons, and assassination attempts on people in various regions of Ukraine. Among the suspects is the former deputy head of the State Emergency Service, who, according to the investigation, ordered crimes against judges and a local activist.
