Scandal during NASA broadcast: Crimea shown as part of Russia

During a live broadcast of the total solar eclipse on August 12, NASA showed a map of Europe that showed temporarily occupied Crimea separated from Ukraine and marked as part of Russia, sparking outrage among Ukrainian social media users.

The incident occurred during the space agency’s official broadcast of the total solar eclipse, which was observed in Spain, Iceland, Greenland and other regions of the Northern Hemisphere. NASA was broadcasting on its official platforms and showing maps of the regions where the astronomical phenomenon could be observed.

In one of the shots, Crimea was separated from mainland Ukraine by a border line, while there was no such demarcation between the peninsula and Russia. This created the impression that the occupied peninsula belonged to the Russian Federation.

NASA has not yet publicly commented on the situation or explained the appearance of such a map on the air.
