Scandal surrounding Zelensky’s entourage complicates path to EU – Politico

The corruption scandal surrounding people in President Volodymyr Zelensky’s inner circle may complicate negotiations on Ukraine’s rapid accession to the European Union.

The article states that, against the backdrop of Kyiv’s desire to join the EU next year, new anti-corruption investigations are creating serious reputational risks for Ukraine.

In particular, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office have declared a suspicion against the former head of the President’s Office, Andriy Yermak. He is suspected of money laundering during the construction of luxury real estate near Kyiv.

The NABU and SAPO stated that Yermak was allegedly “a member of an organized criminal group involved in money laundering.”

As Politico notes, the scandal began to gain momentum after an investigation into possible corruption schemes in the energy sector, particularly around Energoatom. Later, other figures connected to the government appeared in the case.

As a reminder, the European Commission commented on the case of the former head of the President’s Office, Andriy Yermak , who is suspected of involvement in money laundering.
